A Fiery Searcher beetle… 20 August 2013

Fiery Catapillar Hunter, Brush Run, 8-20-13

A Fiery Searcher, Calosoma scrutator, climbs a brick wall of our house in Columbia, Howard County at night. Two of these uncommon  beetles were hunting the abundant tent caterpillars in our yard. This was the first year I had seen them here.  We found one on the North Carolina Outer Banks this May.  Below the same beetle explores more of the wall joints before running down into some leaves.  They sure move fast!
