Great Purple Hairstreak and Praying Mantis, New Bridge Road, Dorchester County, 11 September 2012

This hairstreak narrowly missed being lunch as it flew off right before the mantis pounced. Great Purple Hairstreaks are found on the lower eastern shore of Maryland where their larvae feed on mistletoe. The flower the hairstreak is perched on looks like Yellow Crownbeard, Verbesina occidentalis.
