Checkered Skipper can be fairly common in parts of Maryland, but not in this area. Some of them show a nice bluish sheen as displayed here.
These small Southern Broken Dash Skippers rarely come north in late summer to Howard County. This one is nectaring on white eupatorium flowers which attract many butterflies in late summer.
Here is a fresh Swarthy Skipper at Gateway on August 19, 2013. They become more common later in the month.
