Red Admiral at Meadowbrook Park, 15 October 2013

I thought the butterfly season was over after the recent rainy spell, but this newly emerged Red Admiral said otherwise. I’ve never seen one with the blue highlights in the wing tips before.

Another Red Admiral at Gateway Business Park on 6 September 2013. A fresh Red Admiral is a thing of beauty with the white and red surrounded by elegant black. Gateway is on the Howard County coastal plain and has large areas of white boneset (eupatorium species) that bloom in late August and early September. These blooms attract many butterflies including rarities like Snout, White M Hairstreak and Ocola Skipper.
